Cultivating the Garden of Your Mind

Standard

Do you ever imagine things? Are they scary things? Things you’d like to have?

Did you ever grow things in the garden of your mind? You can grow ideas in the garden of your mind. All you have to do is think…and they’ll grow.

I’m so glad this video went viral this week. It made me smile and reminded me why I love to write. We all have a garden in our minds. For many years, I let mine go barren. There was no watering happening. No planting of seeds. Hell, it never saw the light of day, so how could anything grow there?

In the last few years, I re-discovered that garden in my mind, waiting quietly, dying, withering away. I turned on the light with some fresh, new ideas. I tilled up the soil, got a little aeration in those rows. Planted the seeds of a book. Watered that baby with careful planning and diligent work day in and day out. Now, my plant has sprung up and it has friends. The garden of my mind is lush and wonderful. It contains magical fruits and exotic vegetation. The garden of my mind is like the freaking Garden of Eden, but without the forbidden tree you can’t eat from or evil sneaky snakes.

Make sure you don’t let the garden of your mind go untended. Because the garden of your mind is a terrible thing to waste. (Oh boy, did you feel that? That was the collective groans of everyone who just read that line)

  1. I hate it when Mr. McFeely tries to unload one of his whistles on you when you didn’t order one. He smiles a little too big when you put the whistle in your mouth. I’m on to you McFreaky…

  2. awww! i miss mr. rogers. i hadn’t seen this before, so thanks for sharing. that so rocked. (and is it just me or does sheldon from the big bang theory look like mr. rogers’s long, lost son?)

  3. i loved that! we never had mr rogers in new zealand – so many cool cardigans! my garden is full of weeds at the moment which i’m slowly pulling up by the roots. a beautiful analogy that has come at the right time for me :) thanks!
